Fosscomm 2010 is over – Review from Fedora’s point of view

Fosscomm 2010 is over!

The previous weekend (24-25/4) in Thessaloniki, Greece took place the yearly FOSS Community conference – FossComm 2010 which is right now the biggest FOSS conference in Greece. Greek Fedora team was there and had a great time and presence.

In the last months Greek Fedora community is very active with a lot of adds especially in the translations and Ambassador team. That’s why in every foss event in Greece we have the best and active presence.
In last year’s FossComm, Fedora’s booth had three ambassadors/contributors, one translator and one friend of us who is now a member of the marketing team. This year our booth was way bigger with 7 ambassadors/contributors one contributor from the marketing team, one female translator and one beautiful girl who is helping continuously fedora without being registered anywhere.
The conference was successful with about 500 people attending. What a wonderful chance to inform people about Fedora, our new Greek Fedora forum and find new contributors.
Our booth had everything, the usual LiveCDs and install DVDs, many flyers, fedora stickers, fedora buttons, cheat cubes and 2 fedora coffee cups. I am very thrilled about the passion of our new contributors who gave their best to inform the people and present Fedora 13’s new futures. By numbers we gave a lot of live CDs (250), flyers (130), swag and we earned 3 new translators and one marketing guy.

In FossComm now, Fedora had one talk and one workshop. The talk had the title “Fedora fails and that a good thing” and made by me and Pierros Papadeas. In the talk Pierros had the role of the Fedora as an operating system and I had the role of the Fedora Community. We introduced the fedora architecture and we explained that even when & if we fail our infrastructure is such well organized and build that the fail turns into a good thing about the Fedora project. With other words we present our perfect governance. The audience gave us very positive feedback and that pleased us.
In the workshop Pierros Papadeas impressed the audience presenting Fedora 13’s new futures. I have to admit that his presentation was (as always) amazing, encouraging new people to give a try to Fedora 13.

In the end i am pretty sure that Fedora had another successful presence in FossComm 2010. Well done guys, you did an excellent job. Way to go!

I want to admit that I spent little time in the Fedora booth because I was FossComm’s 2010 event organizer and I had many responsibilities. 🙂

Let’s Rock at Athens – OpenFest 2010

Trying to follow the Fedora’s 13 moto “Rock it” i am traveling to Athens to catch up the rest of the Greek Fedora ambassadors to represent Fedora project at a two days FOSS conference called OpenFest. During the weekend we will have the opportunity to discuss some major topics such as a localized forum for Fedora and general our next moves inside Greece. As always Fedora will have a talk from Kostas introducing Fedora 13 new futures-Fedora community and as always, a cool booth. Pierros, Kostas, Anastasis and Thalia have done a great job burning 300+ Fedora 12 Live cds, printing posters, coffee cups, creating/printing some Fedora cheat cubes and so many others goodies! Thank you guys. Additionally we are determined to complete the Greek translations for the Fedora 13 release. That’s why we are organizing a Fedora translation marathon which will be a parallel event inside Openfest. It is a good opportunity to show the people how is the leading force in Greece works and to find new translators/contributors! That’s all for now. I’ll keep you posted from my twitter account and I will write about my experiences after the event. Till then, happy hacking 🙂

Fedora talk at University of Macedonia – recap

This Sunday (14/2) I gave a talk/workshop about the Fedora project as an operating system and a community of contributors.

In the first hour I described the Fedora as a leading community to the FOSS world and generally how many cool stuff are happening here.  Later on I showed them how easy and meanfull it is to be a Fedora project contributors and I gave some examples about the Special Interest Groups.

After that I presented them the new cool futures of the Fedora 12 release and how to create a Fedora 12 Live USB Stick.

The last one and a half hour the talk turned into a workshop where everybody lived the Fedora 12 experience on their desktops. They had the opportunity to learn how to install Fedora 12 from a livecd to the hard drive, to explore the system and generally learn something new, simple and different from their orange funky operating system they use to work. The audience were actually 25 Ubuntu users and after the talk I received many positive comments about the Fedora Project.

During the talk there were 2 GREAT (female) volunteers who were interpreting everything into Greek Sign Language. This is a new perspective which must be adopted by everyone. The whole presentation was recorded (+the girls) and it will be published soon.

I really want to thank GreekLUG who invited me and in that point I want to mention that the guys are making a really good work here in Thessaloniki.

In the future we are planning at least 2 more talks, one of them regarding OLPC and Sugar.

You can find my presentation’s slides here. Some photos are from Fosdem and shotted by Luca Foppiano.

P.S.: I own you a Fosdem recap too. I’ll write/publish it soon 🙂

Giving a Fedora talk at Thessaloniki’s audience

I am extremely happy! The past week, GreekLUG invited me to give some talks about Fedora and i was instantly responded. That’s why this Sunday at 18:00  I will have a presentation at University of Macedonia, about Fedora as an operating system. After the talk the attendances will experience the new cool futures of the Fedora 12 release.

Probably next week the same day and time I will give a second talk about Fedora as a community and let the people who will attend to experience the magic of the Fedora community.

Additional Pierros Papadeas gave me GlezosOLPC (I am very happy about that) for presenting it to north Greece and probably I will give a third talk about Sugar spin.

More announcements will be announced soon!

Fosdem 2010 day 01 and FAD

We just came back from the annual “night beer fest” with Fedora company. It was really a great time with a lot of cool guys, loughs and some internal (Greek) flames. Today was the first day at Fosdem and I had the opportunity to meet a lot of interesting people and generally FOSS hackers around the globe. For one more year the organization team of Fosdem did a really great job. Congratulation guys, we love you all. 🙂

I also had the opportunity to be at Fedora’s (really awesome) booth and talk to people about fedora. Here the audience was about different because they already knew what is fedora so they asked more detailed question about how do things work under the hood.

Fosdem's main room

In a few sentences I can describe fosdem as the biggest FOSS conference now days which brings hackers and generally foss contributors around the world in one place at the same time. These days are really important because great minds get together, great thoughts are born and big things are happens. About today all the presentations were really awesome. In every room there was a interesting talk about almost everything. From the hardware, to the software and from the software to the the human site of FOSS in general. Unfortunately I could not attend to as much presentations i wanted to but i make it to follow Spacewalk talk which was simply awesome. Although I am really happy listening to Max talking about Fedora Governance and how things work inside fedora in a way that the community makes the most of the decision trough a democratic way. This is a really cool part of the fedora project.

Yesterday there was a FAD where all fedora contributor who were in town got together for a meal. Our goal was to discuss and solve some issues that have been came up recently at EMEA region. Some interesting talks where made and some event better suggestions. The sure thing is that we will all do our best to solve the issues, make some extra ideas and proposals and grow up the fodora as a community as an operating system too. More brainstorming is coming soon.

It’s time to catch some sleep because tomorrow is the last day at Fosdem and I want to enjoy every second of it.
